  1. ENERGY CONSERVATION: What can I do in my home to conserve energy?.
        There are many things you can do around your house to conserve energy. The only thing limiting you are your finances. The following list contains some energy efficient solutions to many household problems. This list begins with low cost solutions and works its way up to high dollar solutions.

    • Inexpensive Solutions:
      • Turn your water heater down to 120° F.
      • Insulate your water heater with an insulating blanket.
      • Install water saving shower heads and faucets.
      • Replace standard incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps.
      • Wash only full loads of clothes in cold water.
      • Air dry your clothes.
      • Use energy saving settings on home appliances.
      • Install a programmable thermostat and set it at 68° F in winter and 55° F when you go to bed.
      • Close vents in unused rooms.
      • Repair leaky faucets and toilets


    • Moderately priced solutions = moderate energy savings:
      • Get a professional energy audit to determine sources of air infiltration.
      • Caulk all leaks found through the audit.
      • Seal and insulate heating and cooling ducts.
      • Install insulating shades or storm windows to windows and doors.
      • Insulate hot water pipes in basements and crawlspaces.
      • Caulk and insulate foundation from rim joist to below frost line.
      • Insulate crawlspace/ unheated basement ceilings.
      • Increase attic insulation.


    • Higher priced solutions = high energy savings:
      • Replace toilets with low flow water efficient toilets.
      • Replace outdated appliances with energy efficient appliances.
      • Upgrade utilities (water heater, furnace, air conditioner, etc…) to more energy efficient units.
      • Upgrade to superinsulating windows with a low e coating.
